Founding AI engineer.
The first engineer alongside the founders. You would own how the agents are built, evaluated, served and secured, and the economics of all of it. Toronto; early stage; equity that means something.
What the work is
Cloisa drafts coordinated Canada–US tax files for licensed tax professionals, with client identifiers kept inside the firm. The product pages say what we build; this page is about how well it has to be built.
-
The agent system
Design and build the platform the agents run on, end to end: models, the harness around them, and the evaluation that decides what ships. The architecture choices are yours to make and defend, with the founders, against real cases.
-
The economics
Quality per dollar is a design constraint from day one, not an optimization for later. At scale, careless choices here are the difference between a business and a cautionary tale.
-
The boundary
Client identifiers never leave the firm. You would build to that promise, and to the evidence standards behind it, including SOC 2 readiness.
What makes you right for it
A draft profile, honestly labelled. It will sharpen as the work does. If you are close but not an exact match, write anyway.
You have done this before, with your own hands, and you know what it costs.
- You have adapted open-weight models and served them in production, at more than one scale, and you know from experience how capability moves as scale changes
- You know the real trade-offs between fine-tuning, distillation, quantization, retrieval and orchestrating multiple models, and you can say when each one wins and when it quietly fails
- You have built, or deeply modified, an agent harness, and you understand that the harness decides as much about quality as the model does
- You think in cost per document and cost per token, and you have made quality-per-dollar calls that someone else had to pay for
- You treat evaluation as infrastructure: if it is not measured against graded cases, it does not ship
- You have worked with sensitive data and you understand what SOC 2 and basic security discipline demand of a system's design, not just its paperwork
This is expertise we expect you to bring. It is too late to start learning it here.
The honest terms
-
It is a startup, fully
Long hours, real risk, and problems nobody hands you a plan for. You drive your own roadmap, and personal drive matters more here than any credential.
-
What you get
Founding-team equity, the architecture decisions, and a rate of learning that salaried work cannot match. If this works, we all win together. If it does not, you leave with skills that compound anywhere.
-
Where and how
We are in Toronto. The work is intense but human: we plan around reality, and we say what is true, internally and on this site.
If this reads like your work, write to hello@cloisa.com. A few lines about what you have built, with links, beats any resume. We reply personally.
